Rotors using gas bearings are particularly complex to design due to the low damping and stiffness compared to conventional oil bearings (in fact not too disimilar to magnetic bearings) and the non-linear nature of their behaviour. OFTTech has unique software developed in-house to analyse the rotordynamic behaviour of rotor systems using gas bearings, magnetic bearings and classic oil lubricated ball bearings or tilting pad bearings.
Validation of the OFTTech rotordynamics software has been achieved by comparison with experiments on a magnetic bearing supported super-critical rotor.
